ALGIERS- Stéphane Romatet has been appointed as the new French Ambassador to Algeria, replacing François Gouyette who has been in office since 2020. While some media sources suggest that Mr. Romatet will take office in July, the news of his appointment was confirmed on May 17th by the Grand Mosque of Paris. As per tradition, the rector of the mosque, Chems-Eddine Hafiz, received Mr. Romatet, who is described as a “seasoned diplomat” by Algerian and French media.

At 63 years of age, Mr. Romatet has previously served as the ambassador to Australia and Egypt, as well as the diplomatic adviser to former Prime Minister Manuel Valls. His most recent post was as the director of the crisis and support center at the Quai d’Orsay, where he led relief operations for victims of the War in Ukraine and the earthquake in Turkey and Syria.

As the new French Ambassador to Algeria, Mr. Romatet will be tasked with strengthening the relationship between the two countries and promoting cooperation in various fields.
