Algiers, Algeria | October 29th, 2024 — In a landmark step towards enhancing Algeria’s aquaculture sector, the Ministry of Fisheries and Fishery Production and the Korean International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) signed an agreement on Monday in Ouargla. This accord centers on the delivery of a state-of-the-art feed production facility for farmed fish and shrimp, a project that aims to address the essential feed needs of Algeria’s aquaculture industry.
The signing ceremony, held at the Experimental Shrimp Farming Facility in Hassi-Benabdallah, East Ouargla, brought together high-ranking officials, including senior representatives from Algeria’s Ministry of Fisheries, local authorities, South Korean Ambassador to Algeria You Ki-Jun, and KOICA representatives. Under this agreement, the South Korean delegation commits to transferring the project’s management to Algeria, thereby enabling local authorities to fully exploit the facility’s potential.
An additional milestone of the event was the signing of a separate agreement involving the National Center for Research and Development of Fisheries and Aquaculture (CNRDPA), along with the Directorate of Employment and the Directorate of Vocational Training and Education in Ouargla. This partnership underscores the cooperative efforts to foster skill development and employment in aquaculture.
Farid Harouadi, Inspector General at the Ministry of Fisheries, lauded the project as a successful outcome of Algeria-South Korea cooperation. He emphasized that the new feed production unit, unique in Algeria, will significantly support investment in freshwater aquaculture, inland fishing, and marine aquaculture, enhancing the country’s capability to sustain its growing aquaculture needs.
With a robust production capacity of 10 tons of feed per day, the unit is expected to satisfy a large share of the national aquaculture demand, thus reducing Algeria’s reliance on imported feed. Salah Bouaïcha, Local Director of Fisheries and Fishery Production, highlighted that this facility will strengthen aquaculture both in coastal and inland regions, helping to bolster the domestic market and cut down on import costs.
In his address, South Korean Ambassador You Ki-Jun described the project as a major advancement in the Algeria-Korea partnership, contributing to the aquaculture industry’s growth and development. He acknowledged Algeria’s vast potential in aquaculture and expressed confidence that this initiative would catalyze further advancements in the sector, fostering a sustainable and economically viable fishery industry for the nation.
