Algiers, Algeria | December 13th, 2024 — In a move aimed at revitalizing the national livestock sector, Algeria has officially installed a new commission tasked with reinforcing domestic red meat production. Chaired by Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development, and Fisheries, Youcef Cherfa, this initiative reflects the strategic priorities set by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune to develop the red meat sector and stabilize the livestock market.
A Vision for Self-Sufficiency in Red Meat Production
The newly established commission will focus on examining measures to enhance Algeria’s national herds of sheep and cattle, exploring strategies to protect these vital resources. Their goal is to significantly reduce red meat imports while boosting local production. Over the next two weeks, the commission members will work towards creating a comprehensive, actionable roadmap to strengthen the industry. The installation ceremony was attended by key stakeholders, including representatives from the Union of Algerian Farmers, the National Agriculture Chamber, and several other organizations integral to Algeria’s agricultural framework.
