Strengthening Bilateral Cooperation: Algeria’s Sonatrach, Libya’s National Oil Corporation Hold Joint Steering Committee Meetings

Algiers, Algeria | December 23rd, 2024 — In a significant development that underscores the deepening partnership between Libya and Algeria, the National Oil Corporation (NOC) of Libya and Algeria’s state-owned oil giant, Sonatrach, convened for the inaugural meetings of their joint steering committee. The meetings, which began yesterday at the NOC headquarters in Tripoli, are set to span two days of intensive discussions aimed at enhancing bilateral cooperation in the energy sector.

The sessions were attended by key representatives from both countries, including Hussein Safar, the NOC Board Member and Chairman of the Libyan side of the steering committee, and Youssef Khenfer, the Chairman of the Algerian side. Also present were members of the committee, along with heads and members of the various subcommittees that will address specific areas of collaboration.

A wide range of topics was covered during the opening discussions, focusing on areas that are critical to both nations’ energy agendas. The committee has emphasized the importance of mutual efforts in exploration, production, and field development, with a particular focus on advancing renewable energy initiatives. The development of human capital was also highlighted, with an emphasis on training and capacity building to ensure sustainable growth in the oil and gas sectors.

The subcommittees, which have been established under the main committee, are set to play a pivotal role in steering specific projects forward. These include the Exploration, Development, and Production Committee, the Operations and Petroleum Services Committee, and the Training and Knowledge Exchange Committee. These specialized groups will work closely together to ensure effective collaboration and progress across various technical and operational fronts.
