Strengthening Bilateral Ties: Algeria and Angola to Sign Twenty Key Cooperation Agreements

Algiers, Algeria | December 15th, 2024 — Algeria and Angola are poised to sign approximately twenty cooperation agreements in the coming days, focusing on strategic sectors identified as priorities by both nations. The announcement was made by Algeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ahmed Attaf, following his meeting with Angolan President João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço. Attaf, who is visiting Angola as the special envoy of Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, expressed optimism about the deepening of bilateral relations, emphasizing the potential for further collaboration between the two countries.

Economic Cooperation to Reflect Political Ties

Attaf highlighted that while the political relations between the two nations are robust, the economic partnerships have yet to reflect the full potential of their alliance. “We must honestly admit that our economic relations are not yet at the level that both countries aspire to,” Attaf acknowledged, stressing the importance of rectifying this gap. He revealed that the two countries’ foreign ministries are working diligently to address this imbalance and elevate economic cooperation to the level of their exemplary political ties.

Establishing a Joint Business Council

A key development in this regard is the establishment of a Joint Business Council, aimed at fostering greater interaction between the business communities of Algeria and Angola. This initiative will serve as a platform for collaboration, encouraging trade and investment exchanges between the two countries, and further cementing their growing economic partnership.

The new business council will convene as part of a broader effort to enhance economic ties. According to Attaf, the cooperation between the two nations holds “enormous potential,” with opportunities for growth across a wide array of sectors, including energy, infrastructure, agriculture, and technology.

Angola’s Role in Regional Peace and Stability

In addition to economic matters, Attaf also conveyed President Tebboune’s congratulations to Angola for its leadership role in peacebuilding efforts in the Great Lakes region, particularly in facilitating negotiations between the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Rwanda. Angola’s contribution to stabilizing the region has been recognized by Algeria, which continues to support Angola’s efforts for a peaceful resolution to ongoing tensions in the area.

Attaf highlighted the pivotal role of President João Lourenço in these efforts, underscoring the significance of Angola’s diplomatic actions as a stabilizing force in the region. “I am here in Luanda on the eve of an important event for the Great Lakes region, as President Lourenço plays a critical role in bringing about peace between the DRC and Rwanda,” said Attaf.

Angola’s Upcoming Presidency of the African Union

Looking ahead, Attaf emphasized the shared commitment between Algeria and Angola to strengthening African unity, noting that Angola will assume the presidency of the African Union (AU) next year. He conveyed President Tebboune’s strong support for Lourenço’s leadership, assuring him that Algeria stands firmly behind Angola as it takes on this vital role. “The success of Angola’s presidency of the African Union will be a success for Angola, Algeria, and Africa as a whole,” Attaf concluded.
