Algiers, Algeria | October 14th, 2024 — In a landmark visit underscoring the deep-rooted historical ties between Algeria and India, President Droupadi Murmu of India arrived in Algiers on Sunday for a four-day state visit aimed at enhancing bilateral cooperation across multiple sectors. Upon her arrival at the Houari-Boumediene International Airport, she was warmly welcomed by Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, who emphasized the importance of this historic visit, marking the first time an Indian president has officially visited Algeria.
On Monday, President Murmu paid her respects at the Martyr’s Sanctuary in Algiers, honoring the sacrifices made during Algeria’s glorious War of Liberation. Accompanied by Algeria’s Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Kamel Baddari, she then visited the National Museum of the Mujahid, which vividly narrates the story of Algeria’s resistance and the political struggle that characterized its path to independence.
Following these poignant tributes, President Murmu and President Tebboune convened for high-level talks at the Presidential Palace, which were later expanded to include members of their respective delegations. This dialogue underscored the mutual desire to bolster economic investments and trade exchanges between the two nations. President Tebboune highlighted that both countries share a rich history rooted in solidarity, friendship, and mutual respect, and expressed optimism about future collaborations.
In a joint press conference after their discussions, President Tebboune commended the longstanding relations between Algeria and India, reiterating the commitment to enhance investment and trade initiatives. “We agreed on the necessity to elevate our cooperation in various sectors, focusing on investment opportunities and trade exchanges, while also preparing for the next session of the Joint Cooperation Commission and business meetings aimed at strengthening our bilateral relations,” he stated.
President Murmu echoed these sentiments, reaffirming India’s unwavering support for Algeria. “We are committed to elevating our relations to new heights, with a particular focus on investment,” she remarked, emphasizing the importance of the ongoing Economic Forum. This forum, which commenced concurrently with her visit, is aimed at identifying collaborative economic projects and revitalizing economic and commercial cooperation between both countries.
During her stay, the discussions extended to critical international issues where both leaders recognized a convergence of views and agreed to continue efforts for peace and stability. Murmu’s visit to Algeria is historic not only for its significance in fortifying bilateral ties but also for its emphasis on shared struggles against colonialism, which remain an inspiration for both nations in their pursuit of prosperity for their people.
Additionally, the visit included a courtesy call by Salah Goudjil, Speaker of the Council of the Nation, further emphasizing the collaborative spirit of the visit. The two countries, with their immense economic potential, aspire to infuse a new dynamism into their historical relations.
The economic exchanges between Algeria and India have seen substantial growth, with trade volumes nearing $2 billion in recent years. Key sectors for collaboration encompass heavy industries, infrastructure, hydrocarbons, electricity, mining, pharmaceuticals, textiles, agriculture, and ICT, highlighting the broad spectrum of opportunities available for mutual benefit.
As President Murmu’s visit progresses, the focus remains firmly on forging new partnerships and enhancing existing collaborations, paving the way for a prosperous future for both nations. This pivotal visit is a testament to Algeria and India’s enduring commitment to strengthening their ties and fostering a collaborative environment that benefits both peoples.
