Authorities and Industry Leaders Reinforce Commitment to Advanced Security Measures and Innovation
Algiers, Algeria | February 22nd, 2025 — Algeria is taking decisive steps to fortify civil aviation security, underscoring its commitment to safeguarding air transport from illicit threats. Minister of Transport Youcef Chorfa reaffirmed the government’s unwavering dedication to this cause during a high-profile symposium organized by Air Algérie under the theme “Security Mindset”, held at the airline’s new headquarters in Algiers on Saturday.
The Minister emphasized that all necessary legal and material measures are being meticulously adapted to strengthen aviation security. Stressing the strategic importance of air transport for Algeria’s economic and social development, Chorfa asserted that security must not be perceived as a constraint but as an integral mindset to be embraced at all operational levels.
A Holistic Approach to Aviation Security
Chorfa highlighted the State’s proactive approach in enhancing security frameworks across airports, terminals, and all aviation infrastructure. “The Algerian government has multiplied its efforts to equip the sector with robust legal and material resources, ensuring that our aviation security standards align with international best practices,” he stated.
As part of this comprehensive strategy, the Ministry of Transport is continuously refining its aviation safety management system. The objective, Chorfa noted, is to “identify and assess risks in real-time, ensuring that preemptive measures are implemented to counter potential threats.” Achieving this goal necessitates the mobilization of all critical human and technical resources while ensuring strict adherence to national and international aviation regulations.
Echoing the Minister’s stance, Hamza Ben Hamouda, President and CEO of Air Algérie, underscored the indispensable role of advanced security measures in the airline’s operations. “Ensuring the safety of our passengers and infrastructure is an absolute imperative,” he declared.
Ben Hamouda emphasized that proactivity and innovation are key in mitigating emerging security threats. He pointed to the integration of cutting-edge surveillance systems, digitalization of control procedures, and continuous upgrades to infrastructure as vital measures undertaken by Air Algérie to enhance security. “We are investing heavily in modern security technologies to remain ahead of evolving threats, while also ensuring that our personnel undergo continuous, specialized training,” he added.
Recognizing the transnational nature of aviation security challenges, Ben Hamouda stressed the necessity of close coordination with national and international security bodies. “Effective aviation security cannot be achieved in isolation. This is why we are committed to aligning our protocols with global best practices and fostering collaboration with leading aviation security organizations, including the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO),” he stated.
To this end, Air Algérie has implemented a series of advanced security initiatives, including enhanced baggage and cargo screening technologies, biometric passenger identification systems, and real-time threat detection protocols. The company also places a strong emphasis on cybersecurity measures to protect critical aviation infrastructure from digital threats.
Maintaining high security standards is not only a regulatory necessity but also a fundamental pillar for preserving public trust and ensuring the long-term competitiveness of Algeria’s aviation sector. “Security is the bedrock of passenger confidence,” Ben Hamouda asserted. “By making aviation security a core principle of our development strategy, we reinforce trust in our national airline and solidify Algeria’s standing in the global air transport industry.”
The symposium brought together a distinguished panel of stakeholders, including senior officials from the Ministry of Transport, security authorities, leaders of aviation companies, the Director General of the National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC), and international experts from ICAO. This high-level gathering marked a pivotal step in consolidating Algeria’s aviation security culture, reaffirming the country’s resolve to elevate security measures to the highest global standards.
Through a combination of legal reinforcement, technological innovation, international collaboration, and a steadfast security-oriented mindset, Algeria is cementing its position as a regional leader in civil aviation security. The government and Air Algérie remain resolute in their mission to fortify the sector against evolving threats, ensuring a safe, secure, and resilient aviation environment for all.
