ALGIERS- In a meeting held yesterday at the Ministry’s headquarters, Minister of Fisheries and Aquatic Productions, Ahmed Badani, engaged in discussions with the Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), Qu Dongyu, regarding opportunities to enhance cooperation and partnership in the field of maritime fishing, aquaculture development, and applied scientific research.

According to a press release, Minister Badani reiterated his ministry’s readiness “to cooperate and coordinate with the organization to develop campaigns for the assessment of fishery resources and marine or freshwater aquaculture activity, as well as integrated agriculture, notably by achieving the objectives outlined in the sectoral strategy by 2030.”

He also reviewed the sector’s achievements in fishing and aquaculture, as well as future prospects for its development through the exploitation of marine and aquatic potential and the advancement of scientific research.

The Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization emphasized that the UN agency is prepared to provide the necessary technical assistance to contribute to the development of maritime fishing and support scientific research and innovative initiatives. This assistance aims to develop the aquaculture sector, known for its rapid growth and sustainability, into a new industry and profitable investment activity.

Indeed, this would create an efficient integrated green economic chain to meet the growing demand for fish food due to population growth, as the aquaculture sector covers 52% of global fish consumption, the same press release notes.

The meeting concluded with both parties expressing their commitment to working closely together to advance sustainable aquaculture development, harnessing the expertise and resources of both the Ministry of Fisheries and the Food and Agriculture Organization. Such collaboration holds the promise of promoting food security, economic growth, and environmental sustainability in the fisheries sector.
