Algiers, Algeria | January 21st, 2025 — On Tuesday, January 21, 2025, at the headquarters of the Algerian People’s National Army (ANP), General of the Army Said Chanegriha, Algeria’s Minister of State and Chief of Staff of the ANP, hosted a high-level meeting with General of the Army Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the Chief of Uganda’s People’s Defense Forces (UPDF). General Kainerugaba was accompanied by a distinguished Ugandan military delegation during his working visit to Algeria.
The meeting, which was attended by senior military officials including the Secretary-General of the Ministry of National Defense, commanders from various forces, as well as members of the Ugandan delegation, provided an important platform for discussing bilateral military cooperation and coordination on matters of mutual concern.
Exploring Opportunities for Bilateral Military Cooperation
Both leaders exchanged views on enhancing military ties and the potential for deeper collaboration between their respective forces. They discussed a range of pressing security challenges facing the world, with a particular focus on Africa, addressing current developments and strategies for collective action in combating security threats across the continent.
During his address, General Chanegriha welcomed his Ugandan counterpart and expressed his satisfaction with the growing bilateral relations between Algeria and Uganda. He praised the strong partnership that has evolved over the years, particularly highlighting the high-level visits between the two nations. The most notable of these was the official visit of Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni to Algeria in March 2023, which served as a pivotal moment in strengthening the strategic cooperation between the two countries, especially in areas related to African peace, security, and development.
A Shared Vision for African Peace and Security
General Chanegriha reiterated Algeria’s unwavering commitment to supporting Africa’s security and stability, emphasizing the country’s role in fostering peace and development across the continent. He highlighted the significant strides made in military cooperation between Algeria and Uganda, which align with the strategic vision shared by the leaders of both nations. The meeting served as a reaffirmation of the commitment to enhance this collaboration, not only in military matters but also in broader geopolitical issues that affect Africa’s future.
The Algerian Chief of Staff also expressed the ANP’s readiness to continue advancing military cooperation with Uganda, ensuring that the partnership between the two forces evolves into a dynamic and effective relationship, guided by shared values and mutual interests. “Our goal is to implement the strategic vision of our respective leaders, focusing on establishing an effective framework for military cooperation and developing the mechanisms necessary to advance this partnership,” General Chanegriha stated.
Strengthening Regional and Continental Security
For his part, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba commended the warm reception extended to him and his delegation. He expressed his satisfaction with the clear determination of the Algerian side to strengthen bilateral relations, particularly in the realm of military cooperation, and praised Algeria’s role in contributing to the security and stability of Africa. General Kainerugaba reiterated Uganda’s commitment to reinforcing this partnership, which is aimed at ensuring peace and security across the African continent.
