Algiers, Algeria | December 17th, 2024 — Mourad Adjal, the CEO of Sonelgaz, met with senior officials from General Electric Vernova in Atlanta, USA, to explore avenues for reinforcing the strategic partnership between Sonelgaz and the American multinational, particularly in the domain of energy equipment manufacturing. This meeting, held on December 16-17, marks a pivotal moment in Sonelgaz’s efforts to diversify Algeria’s exports beyond hydrocarbons, aligning with national objectives to foster non-oil-based economic growth.

The two-day working visit to Atlanta saw Adjal engaging with key leaders from General Electric Vernova, including Eric Gray, Executive Vice President, and Joe Anis, Executive Director for Energy Services in South Asia, the Middle East, and Africa. The discussions were centered around strengthening bilateral cooperation, particularly in joint projects, and evaluating the pace of progress. Topics included the expansion of GEAT, a joint venture between Sonelgaz and General Electric, focusing on the production of transformers for renewable energy projects under the 15,000 MW program and the manufacturing of gas turbines with capacities ranging from 50 to 100 MW.

Adjal emphasized the importance of the partnership, noting that it is built on a “win-win” cooperation model, which has already yielded significant results. He expressed satisfaction with the progress made in various projects, crediting the resolutions of challenges discussed in prior meetings at Sonelgaz’s headquarters in Algiers. These outcomes, according to Adjal, demonstrate the success of collaborative efforts and underscore the role of expertise transfer and workforce development in fostering long-term success.

The Sonelgaz CEO also highlighted the group’s ambition to expand its export capabilities, with a focus on the Maghreb and African markets. Adjal underscored the potential for Algeria to diversify its foreign exchange earnings by producing and exporting energy equipment, including components for renewable energy projects. He reiterated the importance of General Electric Vernova’s commitment to transferring knowledge and technology to Algeria, in line with the contractual agreements between the two parties.

Representatives from General Electric Vernova reaffirmed their commitment to supporting the partnership, praising Sonelgaz for its resilience and ability to overcome obstacles hindering the advancement of certain projects. The meeting concluded with a shared understanding of the future directions for collaboration, focusing on creating a robust commercial plan aimed at strengthening both companies’ presence in regional markets.
