Algiers, Algeria | December 25th, 2024 —  On Wednesday, December 25, 2024, the Algerian government convened in Algiers to examine a draft law proposing significant amendments to the Social Insurance Act (Law No. 83-11 of July 2, 1983). This legislative initiative, focused on extending maternity leave, represents a crucial step towards enhancing women’s rights and strengthening Algeria’s commitment to gender equity.

The government session, presided over by Prime Minister Nadir Larbaoui, marked a decisive moment in executing the directives of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, who has consistently championed policies empowering women. A communiqué issued by the Prime Minister’s Office emphasized that this reform aligns with the President’s vision of fostering the autonomy of women and reinforcing their rights within the framework of national development.

The proposed extension of maternity leave reflects a comprehensive effort to adapt social insurance laws to the evolving needs of Algerian society. By addressing a key issue affecting working mothers, the reform underscores the government’s recognition of women’s dual roles in professional and family spheres.
