ALGIERS- The country’s strategic projects continue to draw the attention of high-ranking state authorities, particularly those in the mining sector, which are expected to ultimately provide the national economy with locally sourced raw materials currently imported. During yesterday’s cabinet meeting presided over by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, the progress of ongoing mining projects was discussed. To ensure the smooth execution of these projects, the President ordered the implementation of all necessary measures to further advance these strategic projects and adhere to their completion deadlines.
President Tebboune also instructed the government to coordinate among various sectors and intensify efforts while closely monitoring these mining projects, emphasizing the need to overcome any obstacles they may encounter. These instructions underscore the importance accorded to this sector, which is expected to play a crucial role in the country’s economic development in the near future.
Significant Mining Projects
The state is seeking to capitalize on the mineral resources abundant in the country’s soil to generate wealth and employment opportunities while meeting the raw material needs of the industrial sector. Additionally, the aim is to reduce the costs associated with importing these materials from abroad, a significant burden on the national treasury, and potentially export surplus materials. The mining sector has thus initiated projects to exploit several deposits across different regions of the country to bolster national production of raw materials.
One such project is the Gara Djebilet project, where exploitation has already commenced through pilot installations. Confirmation of concentrated crude and iron powder has been achieved, with a production capacity of 50,000 tons per year each. The project is set to enter full-scale production, targeting an annual extraction capacity of 40 to 50 million tons of crude iron. This phase will require the establishment of installations, with costs ranging from $1 billion to $1.5 billion annually over a period of 8 to 10 years.
In addition to this project, there is the integrated phosphate project, a partnership between Asmidal (a Sonatrach subsidiary), the Manal Group, and two Chinese companies, with an investment of approximately $7 billion, excluding associated infrastructure projects estimated at $5 to $6 billion. This project will be implemented in three phases, each lasting five years. Accompanying this is another project in the Laâouinet region (Tébessa) for the production of phosphate products, positioning Algeria as a major producer and exporter of phosphate fertilizers internationally.
Regarding the zinc and lead mine project in Oued Amizour, with exploitable reserves estimated at 34 million tons, annual production is projected at 170,000 tons of zinc concentrates and 30,000 tons of lead concentrates. The state has already taken all necessary measures to ensure the conditions for its launch, particularly concerning safety and environmental protection aspects.
During the opening ceremony of the 2nd edition of the international iron, steel, and mining products exhibition, Nadjiba Bourenane, the Director-General of Mines at the Ministry of Energy, highlighted that the development of the mining sector aligns with public policy directives aimed at sustainably exploiting the country’s mineral resources to support their transformation within the national industry, creating local added value and subsequently exporting abroad.
