Algiers- Algeria, May 6, 2024 –  Minister of Communication, Mohamed Lâagab, underscored on Monday from El-Oued province that “the press played a vital role in the Algerian resistance against French colonialism, making tremendous sacrifices to secure the independence of our homeland.”

Addressing the audience at the national symposium titled “The Press and Algerian Journalists During the Colonial Period 1830-1962,” held at the “Abou El-Kacem Sâadallah” conference hall at Chahid Hamma Lakhdar University in El-Oued, Mr. Lâagab emphasized the significance of researching the history of elite individuals and journalists who advocated for raising awareness about the imperative to combat colonialism.

The minister advocated for “the development of an academic program for studies and research to illuminate the lives and contributions of the press heroes who lived during Algeria’s colonial era, particularly during the glorious liberation war,” stating that “journalists of that era were intellectuals who understood their role in informing and mobilizing citizens to strive for independence and national sovereignty.”

Taking the opportunity of this gathering, the Minister of Communication presided over a ceremony honoring distinguished journalistic figures who left a lasting impact on the Algerian press during the colonial and post-independence periods, such as Ammar Talbi, Mohamed Larbi Zebiri, and Mahieddine Amimour. During this event, he also visited an exhibition featuring photographs and newspapers from the colonial era before inspecting an audio-visual studio at Chahid Hamma Lakhdar University in El-Oued.

Organized by the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of El-Oued, under the auspices of the Ministry of Communication, and with the support of the research laboratory in socio-economic history of Algeria, this symposium spans two days and is attended by a cohort of academics, researchers, and communication professionals.
