Algiers, Algeria | October 2nd, 2024 — A terrorist surrendered to military authorities in Bordj Badji Mokhtar, and 17 individuals supporting terrorist groups were arrested during separate operations across the country between September 25 and October 1, the Ministry of National Defense (MDN) announced on Wednesday.
The MDN’s statement emphasized the success of the operations, attributing them to the “high professionalism, vigilance, and constant readiness” of the People’s National Army (ANP) in counterterrorism and border security efforts. These operations are part of ongoing efforts to combat terrorism and organized crime.
The terrorist, identified as Reggadi Amhamed, also known as “Abou El-Hammam,” surrendered in Bordj Badji Mokhtar, located in the 6th Military Region. He handed over a Kalashnikov submachine gun, five loaded ammunition magazines, a defensive grenade, and other equipment. Additionally, ANP units discovered and destroyed 20 homemade bombs in Tizi Ouzou.
In various operations, 17 individuals suspected of supporting terrorist groups were arrested across the country, further demonstrating the effectiveness of the ANP’s counterterrorism strategy.
In the fight against organized crime, ANP units, in coordination with security services, intercepted 31 drug traffickers and prevented attempts to smuggle over five quintals of processed cannabis from the Moroccan border. Authorities also seized 2.38 kg of cocaine and 376,682 psychotropic tablets during these operations.
In Tamanrasset, Bordj Badji Mokhtar, In Salah, and In Guezzam, 96 individuals were apprehended, and 29 vehicles, 118 generators, and 42 jackhammers were confiscated, along with quantities of crude gold, explosives, and illegal mining equipment.
Further arrests included 18 individuals, and authorities seized a Kalashnikov submachine gun, eight hunting rifles, four automatic pistols, 15,200 liters of fuel, 36 quintals of tobacco, and 20.4 tons of smuggled food.
The Coast Guard also foiled attempts by 139 individuals to migrate illegally in homemade boats, while 452 illegal immigrants from various nationalities were arrested across the country.
