Algiers, Algeria | January 05th, 2024 — On January 4, 2025, the renowned Swedish climate activist, Greta Thunberg, arrived in Algeria, marking the beginning of her participation in a pivotal solidarity event with the Sahrawi people. The event, which will be held at the Sahrawi refugee camps in Tindouf, aims to highlight the ongoing plight of the Sahrawi people and their struggle for independence, a cause Thunberg has expressed solidarity with for years.

Thunberg, now 22, first rose to global prominence in 2018 when she initiated the global youth-led movement “Fridays for Future,” after striking from school to protest for climate action outside the Swedish parliament. She has since become one of the most vocal and influential advocates for climate justice and sustainable development.

During her visit to Algeria, Thunberg will participate in an international solidarity conference with the Sahrawi people, running from Sunday, January 5, to Tuesday, January 7, 2025. The event will coincide with the visit of Swedish activists Benjamin Ladra and Sanna Qutbi, who have undertaken an extraordinary journey, cycling 48,000 kilometers around the world in support of the Sahrawi cause and to raise awareness of the situation in Western Sahara.

The young Swedish activist’s engagement in this cause underscores her commitment to advocating for human rights and climate justice in all regions facing adversity. Thunberg’s participation in this solidarity event comes at a critical time as the Sahrawi people continue to endure hardship in refugee camps in the Algerian desert. The gathering will offer Thunberg and other activists an opportunity to exchange experiences and explore how climate change intersects with the fight for freedom, justice, and human dignity.

In addition to her participation in the conference, Thunberg is expected to meet with Sahrawi President Ibrahim Ghali, further strengthening the ties between the global climate movement and the Sahrawi struggle for independence.

Thunberg’s arrival in Algeria follows her sea journey from Almería, Spain, to the port of Ghazaouet in Tlemcen, before traveling by land to the refugee camps in Tindouf. Her visit has garnered significant international attention, amplifying the call for greater recognition of the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination.

Through her activism, Thunberg hopes to not only amplify the voices of the Sahrawi people but also raise awareness about the larger geopolitical and environmental challenges facing marginalized communities worldwide.
