Algiers, Algeria | February 11th, 2025 — Recent media reports have confirmed that Syria has effectively blocked the anticipated visit of Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita, citing pressing security concerns. According to informed sources, the newly established Syrian government, under President Ahmed Hussein Al-Charaa, has expressed serious reservations regarding Bourita’s trip, citing intelligence reports that suggest the possible use of espionage equipment by Moroccan operatives.

The Syrian intelligence services demanded the deployment of advanced detection devices to scan for potential surveillance bugs before allowing Bourita’s visit. These security precautions are based on persistent accusations that the Moroccan diplomat had previously engaged in intelligence-gathering activities during visits to other Arab nations, acting in collaboration with the Zionist entity.

This latest diplomatic standoff underscores Damascus’ deep-seated distrust toward Rabat, which it perceives as a conduit for foreign interests within the region. The Syrian leadership’s cautious approach signals its reluctance to engage in diplomatic normalization with Morocco, particularly as the latter’s foreign policy continues to align with external geopolitical agendas that are often at odds with the broader Arab consensus.

Algiers-Damascus Relations Flourish as Rabat Expresses Displeasure

The Moroccan government’s frustrations have been further exacerbated by the recent visit of Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf to Syria. Serving as the special envoy of Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, Attaf’s visit underscored the growing strategic and diplomatic ties between Algiers and Damascus, a development that has drawn sharp criticism from Rabat.

Moroccan media outlets, in an apparent bid to deflect from their country’s diplomatic setback, have attempted to link Bourita’s failed visit to Attaf’s successful meetings in Syria. However, analysts argue that Morocco’s diplomatic isolation in this case is a direct consequence of its own questionable practices rather than any external influence exerted by Algeria.

Algeria Reaffirms Solidarity with Syria

The Algerian Foreign Ministry has emphasized that Attaf’s visit to Damascus was conducted within the framework of the historical and fraternal ties uniting Algeria and Syria. A formal statement from the ministry stressed that the visit aimed to explore new avenues for reinforcing bilateral relations and elevating cooperation between the two nations to the highest possible level.

In a powerful gesture of solidarity, Attaf was received by Syrian President Ahmed Hussein Al-Charaa, to whom he personally delivered a handwritten letter from President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. This exchange underscores Algeria’s unwavering support for Syria during a critical phase of its political transition, reaffirming Algiers’ commitment to upholding Arab unity and sovereignty in the face of external interference.
