Algiers, Algeria | June 1st, 2024 —  The prestigious “Le Générique d’Or” or “Golden Generic” awards ceremony, held on Wednesday evening at the Opéra d’Alger Boualem-Bessaih, was marked by the presence of esteemed Syrian artist Jenny Esber. Her attendance, alongside other distinguished artists from nine Arab countries—Palestine, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia—brought an international dimension to the event. This gathering highlighted the unity and shared cultural heritage of the Arab world, celebrating the collective contributions to the arts across these nations.

On the sidelines of the ceremony, Jenny Esber expressed her excitement about being in Algeria again after a long absence (2008). “Good evening everyone, I am very happy to be here at this festival in Algeria. I have missed Algeria since my last visit in 2008. It’s been a long time, and I can see the significant progress the country has made. I am delighted to wear the Algerian caftan, designed by Ilham “Dar Kahina”. It’s a great honor to participate in this festival alongside a group of Arab artists. I love the sense of Arab unity this festival brings, and I hope we can stand together not only in the arts but also on humanitarian issues, such as supporting Palestine and stopping the bloodshed. As Arabs, the caftan symbolizes royalty and femininity. It’s beautiful to wear with a crown because a woman truly looks like a queen when she wears it. I hope I am wearing it properly and that people appreciate it. I wanted to wear something that represents Algerian heritage.”

Jenny Esber’s choice to wear the Algerian caftan at the awards ceremony was a powerful statement of cultural appreciation and solidarity. The caftan, a traditional garment known for its elegance and regal connotations, is deeply rooted in Algerian history and culture. By donning this attire, Esber highlighted the garment’s significance and beauty, bringing it to the forefront of a high-profile international event.

The caftan she wore, designed by Ilham “Dar Kahina”, showcased the intricate craftsmanship and artistry that Algerian fashion is renowned for. The garment’s rich fabric and detailed embellishments reflected the nation’s cultural heritage and Esber’s admiration for Algerian tradition.
