ALGIERS- The ambitious project to transform Tamanrasset airport into a continental airport hub for both passengers and freight is finally taking shape. The Algiers Airport Services Management Establishment (EGSA) has announced that it will launch studies in 2024 to realize the project of a cargo area at Tamanrasset airport.
As part of a program to extend and renovate the existing airport infrastructure, the first phase of the project will consist of a freight area of 64,000 m². The call for tenders for the study was launched on May 25, and an extension of the passenger terminal by 4,000 m² is also in the preparation phase, according to Mr. Mustapha Sebaihi, the P/DG of the establishment.
The works are expected to commence in 2025 or 2026, and once completed, Tamanrasset airport will become an intermodal logistics base, facilitating commercial exchanges between the north and south of the African continent. The airport will also serve as a future passenger hub scheduled by Air Algérie.
The freight base will be further expanded by another base of the public road transport group Logitrans, which is currently being finalized. This is a structuring project that goes beyond just freight. It will encompass transport, logistics, and road-air transport intermodality, forming an integrated project.
The transformation of Tamanrasset airport into a continental airport hub is a significant milestone for the African aviation industry. It will not only boost the economy but also enhance connectivity and accessibility across the continent. We look forward to witnessing the realization of this project and the positive impact it will have on the African aviation industry.
