Algiers, Algeria | July 23rd, 2024 — On Tuesday, Minister of Energy and Mines Mohamed Arkab announced that technical testing for the Koudiet Draouèche seawater desalination plant in Berrihane, El Tarf province, is scheduled to commence in October. During his site inspection, Arkab confirmed that, despite encountering delays in construction relative to the original timeline, the project remains on track for its forthcoming technical evaluations.
The Koudiet Draouèche plant, designed to produce 300,000 cubic meters of desalinated water daily, is a key component of a broader initiative aimed at bolstering water supply capabilities in the region. Spanning 11 hectares, the plant has reached a 68.42% completion rate. Arkab emphasized the urgency of accelerating construction efforts to adhere to the project’s contractual deadlines. Once operational, the facility is anticipated to significantly enhance water availability for residents across El Tarf, Guelma, Souk Ahras, and Oum El Bouaghi.
This development aligns with the strategic plan set forth by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune for the 2022-2024 period, which prioritizes the establishment of desalination plants to combat the escalating demand for potable water exacerbated by climate change and drought conditions.
Arkab also highlighted the substantial progress made by national companies in constructing desalination facilities. These advancements include mastering the necessary technologies and training local expertise. The construction of the Koudiet Draouèche plant is being managed by the Algerian Energy Company (AEC), reflecting the government’s commitment to harnessing domestic resources and capabilities in this vital sector.
