ALGIERS- Amir Ohana, the Knesset Speaker of Moroccan descent and a staunch Zionist, has visited the Moroccan Parliament in Rabat at the invitation of the Makhzen. During his visit, he was warmly received by the Speaker of the Moroccan Parliament, Rachid Talbi Alami. The meeting brought together Moroccan parties that support Zionist and Makhzen relations, while those who reject normalization and advocate for the Palestinian cause were conspicuously absent.

In his address, Ohana expressed his delight at the opportunity to visit Morocco, his ancestral homeland, saying, “Today, I am very happy to be in Morocco, our country.”  However, his statement has stirred controversy and criticism from those who oppose normalization with the Zionist Entity and support the Palestinian cause.

It is worth noting that Ohana’s mother hails from the city of Wazzan, while his father was born in Marrakech. Nevertheless, Ohana himself was born in Beer Sheva and has held several ministerial positions in the right-wing Likud Party since 2019.

Apart from his political career, Ohana is also renowned for being the first Knesset speaker to publicly declare his homosexuality and for his involvement in the global movement for the defense of LGBTQ+ rights. He leads the gay movement within the Likud Party.

Moroccan activists protest against visit of Zionist Knesset Speaker

On Wednesday evening, Moroccan activists gathered in Rabat to protest against the visit of Amir Ohana, the speaker of the Zionist Knesset, to the Moroccan capital. The demonstrators held up signs denouncing his visit and the normalization of relations, and burned the Zionist flag.

The Moroccan Front in Support of Palestine, an organization that opposes the normalization of Morocco’s relations with the Zionist Entity, condemned Ohana’s visit and mobilized its members to hold a demonstration in front of the Moroccan Parliament in Rabat.

In a statement, the Moroccan Front for the Support of Palestine called on Moroccan parliamentarians and supporters of the Palestinian cause to express their opposition to Ohana’s trip to Rabat.

The Moroccan Association for Human Rights also issued a statement condemning the visit by the Speaker of the Knesset.

Meanwhile, Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita met with the Zionist Entity’s Homeland Security Advisor Tzachi Hanegbi in Rabat. The two officials discussed a range of bilateral and regional issues of mutual interest, according to a statement from the Moroccan foreign ministry.

On December 10, 2020, the Zionist entity and Rabat announced the resumption of their diplomatic relations, which had been interrupted twenty years earlier in 2000. Since then, the Zionist Entity has been pursuing an extensive political project to infiltrate various economic, social, and cultural sectors of this Arab country. Tel Aviv has also established significant military cooperation with Rabat, particularly in the field of arms sales. However, experts warn that this policy would inevitably harm the balance of power and stability in the region.
