Algiers, Algeria | December 1st, 2024 — The 28th International Crafts Selling Exhibition, “Artigiano in Fiera,” commenced in Milan with Algeria making a distinguished appearance as the Guest of Honor for the African continent. The Minister of Tourism and Handicrafts, Houria Meddahi, inaugurated Algeria’s official pavilion, joined by Algeria’s Ambassador to Rome and the Consul General in Milan, as well as high-ranking Italian officials, including Italy’s Minister of Tourism Daniela Santanchè and Minister of Education Giuseppe Valditara.
The opening ceremony saw Minister Meddahi attending the inauguration of Saudi Arabia’s pavilion, the Guest of Honor for the Middle East, alongside representatives from the Saudi Royal Institute of Traditional Arts and other cultural institutions. This symbolic moment underscored the deepening global partnerships that events like Artigiano in Fiera facilitate.
In her address, Minister Meddahi expressed pride in Algeria’s participation as a Guest of Honor for Africa, reflecting President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s vision to fortify historical ties and expand bilateral cooperation with Italy. She emphasized Algeria’s commitment to fostering economic and cultural exchange, particularly through the promotion of the traditional crafts sector—a vibrant testament to Algeria’s rich cultural heritage.
The Algerian pavilion is a showcase of national artistry, featuring over 80 artisans who exhibit exceptional craftsmanship across diverse specialties. From intricate ceramics and textiles to fine jewelry and woodwork, the pavilion is a celebration of Algeria’s enduring artistic traditions. The Minister noted that these artisans serve as cultural ambassadors, weaving together the threads of Algeria’s identity with modern creativity.
Algeria’s presence also extends to the tourism sector, with public and private operators promoting Algeria’s unparalleled tourism offerings, including Saharan adventures, mountain retreats, coastal escapes, and thermal spas. Minister Meddahi invited representatives from over 100 participating countries to explore the Algerian pavilion, where the nation’s beauty, diversity, and deep-rooted history come alive through its crafts and cultural exhibits.
Highlighting the significance of the event, Minister Meddahi stated, “Our participation underscores Algeria’s openness to cultural dialogue and economic partnership. It is a platform to share our nation’s heritage with the world, foster collaborations, and showcase the transformative potential of our traditional crafts sector in building bridges of understanding and respect.”
As Algeria celebrates its sixth consecutive participation in this prestigious exhibition, the event affirms the country’s role as a cultural and economic bridge between Africa and Europe, offering visitors a glimpse into the artistry and heritage that define its people. Through this dynamic representation, Algeria not only strengthens its bilateral ties with Italy but also reiterates its position as a beacon of African culture on the global stage.
