ALGIERS-  The Minister of Trade, Mr. Tayeb Zitouni, affirmed on Saturday that the establishment of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) is part of the implementation of the African Union’s (AU) 2063 Agenda.

Under the theme “The Africa We Want,” the creation of the AfCFTA aims primarily to establish a framework for trade among African countries to create a common space for sustainable development over the next 50 years,” stated Mr. Zitouni, in a speech delivered on his behalf by the Secretary General of the Ministry of Commerce at the opening of the tenth African Summit for Investment and Trade in Algiers.

“The holding of this summit is part of the implementation of Algeria’s vision for the African market. A vision based on the creation of the AfCFTA and the complementarity of African economies. In parallel, Algeria is preparing to host the 4th Intra-African Trade Fair (IATF) in September 2025, in line with President Tebboune’s strategy to strengthen trade and economic partnerships among countries on our continent,” he added.

The AfCFTA, which came into effect on January 1, 2021, represents a historic milestone for Africa’s economic integration. It aims to create a single market for goods and services, with free movement of people and investments across the continent. By promoting intra-African trade, the AfCFTA seeks to boost industrialization, stimulate economic growth, and create employment opportunities for Africa’s burgeoning youth population.

Algeria’s commitment to the AfCFTA reflects its recognition of the immense potential that lies in intra-African trade. By facilitating trade and investment flows within the continent, Algeria aims to harness the benefits of regional integration to spur economic development and address the continent’s pressing challenges.

The forthcoming Intra-African Trade Fair in September 2025 will provide a platform for African businesses to showcase their products, forge new partnerships, and explore investment opportunities across various sectors. It will serve as a catalyst for intra-African trade and contribute to the realization of the AfCFTA’s objectives.
