The Algerian Organization of Education Professionals Accuses Malicious Actors of Systematic Sabotage in Schools, Highlights Need to Safeguard Educational Institutions

Algiers, Algeria | January 27th, 2025 —  The Algerian Organization of Education Professionals (AOEP) has issued a stark warning to students across the nation, urging them to remain vigilant against nefarious forces seeking to manipulate their circumstances for the purpose of destabilizing both the educational system and the nation as a whole. In a firm statement, the organization pointed to individuals described as “foreign agents” behind a series of coordinated efforts aimed at wreaking havoc on Algeria’s educational institutions. The organization called on students to resume their studies and remain united against the divisive tactics being employed.

In a statement released to the public, the AOEP outlined its concern over recent events that disrupted the normal functioning of schools. The incidents began with student absenteeism and escalated into systematic acts of sabotage carried out by individuals with unclear motives and agendas. These malicious actions, according to the AOEP, were part of a larger scheme orchestrated by external elements aiming to destabilize the educational sector, which is recognized as a critical pillar of national stability.

“The disturbing events of the past week, starting with students refraining from attending classes, culminated in deliberate acts of destruction, spearheaded by outsiders. These actions have left innocent victims in their wake, all in service of an agenda designed to undermine the security of our country,” the statement read. It emphasized that the education sector—encompassing nearly one-third of Algeria’s population—is a sensitive nerve center for national cohesion, and any disruption within this field has the potential to fracture the social fabric.

The organization condemned the efforts of these groups to incite students to demand lighter academic burdens, including the revision of educational programs. While such demands might appear to be for the benefit of students, the AOEP believes they are, in fact, a pretext for exploiting the student body as pawns in a much larger, questionable agenda. “What is claimed as a demand for easing pressure on students may, in fact, be a tactic to exploit them for a more sinister cause,” the AOEP stressed.

The statement also highlighted the timing of these disruptions, questioning the motivations behind targeting Algeria’s educational system during a period of potential reform. “During a time when the new Minister of Education has promised a comprehensive review of curricula, with a particular focus on reducing the burden on both students and teachers, we are witnessing an orchestrated campaign to destabilize our educational institutions. These are the same forces that branded our traditional educational methods as ‘extremist’ or ‘ideologically driven,’” the AOEP noted.

The organization made clear that they would not stand by as these forces seek to harm the education system and undermine the values upon which it is built. “It is troubling to see the same rhetoric being pushed during protests, where those behind the unrest accuse the educational system of radicalism, despite the fact that it upholds national values and principles.”

In light of these developments, the AOEP reassured the students that their voices had been heard and that the Ministry of National Education, representing the highest levels of government, has already pledged to undertake a thorough review of the curriculum and educational programs. The statement concluded with a reminder that the enemies of the past remain the enemies of today and the future, urging all Algerians—students, teachers, and parents alike—to stay vigilant and united against any efforts to destabilize the country.

Finally, the organization called on parents and educators not to be complacent, urging them to guide and support the youth in these challenging times. “It is imperative that we remain united in our commitment to preserving the integrity of our education system and the values that define our nation,” the AOEP’s message concluded.
