Algiers, Algeria | November 19th, 2024 — Algiers is set to become the global epicenter of contemporary fine arts as it hosts the 8th edition of the International Contemporary Fine Arts Festival from November 26 to December 7, 2024. This much-anticipated event, returning after a seven-year hiatus since 2016, will bring together artists from 39 countries across five continents, featuring 70 distinguished guests. Palestine will be the Guest of Honor, embodying the festival’s commitment to both artistic innovation and the celebration of cultural identity.

A Reimagined Vision for Algerian Fine Arts

Hamza Bounoua, the festival’s commissioner, emphasized during a press conference that the event’s comeback marks a pivotal moment for Algeria’s cultural scene. The festival aims to position Algeria as a hub for artistic diversity while promoting its rich cultural heritage. “This edition is not merely a showcase of art; it is a strategic step toward revitalizing the art market in Algeria,” Bounoua stated.

The program reflects this vision, offering a diverse array of activities that highlight contemporary art while connecting it to Algeria’s cultural wealth. A central theme of this year’s festival is “modernity,” with a focus on blending global artistic heritage with innovative expressions. The event also aims to support emerging talent, featuring a special workshop that will culminate in an exclusive exhibition of young artists’ works.

Palestine: Art as Resistance

Palestine’s selection as Guest of Honor is a poignant choice, underlining the festival’s alignment with international solidarity and the struggle for justice. A dedicated pavilion will showcase the works of 10 Palestinian artists, both from within the occupied territories and the diaspora. These pieces will present their artistic interpretations of the Palestinian cause, offering a compelling narrative of resilience and cultural preservation.

Additionally, the festival will host a symposium titled “Palestinian Art of Resistance” on the occasion of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People. This event will provide a platform for critical dialogue on how art serves as a medium for resistance and a beacon of hope in the face of adversity.

The International Forum on Contemporary Fine Arts

The festival will also feature the International Forum on Contemporary Fine Arts, scheduled for November 27 at the Higher School of Fine Arts in Algiers. Esteemed figures from the global art community will convene to discuss pivotal topics, including the economics of fine arts in the Arab world, digital exhibitions, publishing as a tool for creativity, and the role of art in addressing societal issues.

Notable participants include Sandra Briden Bally, Director of Culture and Heritage for the Seine Maritime region in France, and Disatapondo, Dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts at Thailand’s university. This forum promises to offer fresh perspectives on the contemporary art market and its intersection with pressing global concerns, such as cultural resistance and the empowerment of marginalized voices.
