ALGIERS- The Moroccan Makhzen regime, known for its deceptive tactics and mismanagement, has once again engaged in a diplomatic charade. In a move aimed at enhancing its propaganda machinery, the Moroccan Ministry of Foreign Affairs, led by Nasser Bourita, has appointed Brahim Bah as the Consul General in Oran, Algeria. However, it is important to note that diplomatic relations between Algeria and Morocco have been severed since August 24, 2021, following a range of provocative actions, including the remarks made by the former Moroccan Consul General in Oran, Boutahar Aherdem, who referred to Algeria as an enemy state. This led to the Algerian authorities declaring him a Persona non Grata.
A year later, the relationship between Morocco and the Zionist entity continued to strengthen, which Algeria saw as confirmation of Morocco’s involvement in destabilization plans against Algeria. During this time, terrorist acts, such as arson attacks, plagued several wilayas (provinces) in Algeria with the involvement of Morocco. The situation escalated further when the former Prime Minister of the Zionist entity, Yair Lapid, made hostile declarations about Algeria while being on Moroccan soil. These events compelled Algeria to officially announce the severance of diplomatic relations with Morocco on August 24, 2021. President Abdelmadjid Tebboune emphasized that the relationship between the two countries had reached a point of no return.
The Makhzen’s Industry of Deception
The appointment of Brahim Bah as the new Consul General in Oran raises eyebrows, considering the current state of diplomatic relations between Morocco and Algeria. It appears to be a calculated move by the Makhzen regime, aimed at maintaining a facade of normalcy in its interactions with Algeria. By appointing a new consul general, Morocco aims to convey an image of engagement and dialogue while conveniently brushing aside the severed ties and hostile rhetoric that have characterized the recent relationship between the two countries.
The appointment of Brahim Bah as the Consul General in Oran seems to be a deliberate attempt by the Makhzen regime to present a semblance of normalcy and willingness to engage with Algeria. It serves the dual purpose of projecting an image of diplomatic continuity while deflecting attention from the underlying issues that have led to the deterioration of relations. This move can be seen as part of the broader strategy employed by the Makhzen regime to manipulate public opinion and maintain control over the narrative.
The appointment of a consul general in a country with severed diplomatic ties exemplifies the Makhzen regime’s industry of deception. This is not the first time such tactics have been employed. The Makhzen has a long history of engaging in diplomatic masquerades, using them as tools to manipulate public opinion and divert attention from its internal challenges.
