Algiers, Algeria | November 24th, 2024 — In a bizarre diplomatic blunder, Morocco’s Makhzen regime found itself in an embarrassing position after falsely portraying a technical stopover by Chinese President Xi Jinping’s aircraft as a planned state visit. The misrepresentation, propagated by Moroccan state media, claimed that the brief stop at Casablanca’s Mohammed V International Airport was part of a scheduled diplomatic mission, attempting to elevate a routine refueling break into an official visit.
The situation took a further awkward turn when, as part of the fabricated ceremony, the Makhzen organized an elaborate welcoming event for the Chinese president. To their shock, President Xi was caught off guard upon disembarking from the plane. His facial expressions clearly betrayed his surprise as he surveyed the environment, seemingly confused by the grandeur of the welcome, which was entirely unwarranted. As the Chinese leader made his way towards the reception hall, he notably left behind Morocco’s Crown Prince, Moulay Hassan, without offering the typical courtesies or acknowledgment, a gesture that did not go unnoticed by those present.
Moreover, in an incident that captured the attention of observers, President Xi refused to accept dates offered at the airport, a symbolic gesture often shared in Arab hospitality. Only after the Crown Prince took a date did Xi reluctantly follow suit. This gesture further emphasized the discomfort and lack of trust that pervaded the situation, reflecting the strained diplomatic environment created by the Makhzen’s ill-conceived publicity stunt.
The failed attempt to present a mere technical stopover as a diplomatic triumph for Morocco highlights the regime’s ongoing efforts to manipulate public perception, despite the clear diplomatic repercussions of such actions.
