ALGIERS, ALGERIA | May 26, 2024 — Algeria is embarking on an ambitious journey towards energy transformation with a visionary program aimed at generating 40 TWh of hydrogen by 2030. This initiative marks a significant stride in diversifying Algeria’s energy landscape and harnessing its abundant natural resources. Wind energy, in particular, is poised to play a pivotal role in achieving this ambitious hydrogen production target, constituting nearly half of the anticipated output.
A Strategic Energy Blend
According to Miloud Medjelled, Director of Economic Studies and Prospective at the Ministry of Energy and Mines, Algeria’s hydrogen program is slated to kick off in 2030, with 22 TWh originating from solar energy and 18 TWh from wind sources. This well-balanced approach underscores Algeria’s commitment to harnessing both solar and wind potential effectively.
Presently, Algeria is advancing a 15 MW solar initiative, with plans for an initial phase targeting a production capacity of 3000 MW. This solar endeavor is intricately woven into a broader strategy aimed at producing various forms of hydrogen—blue, green, and grey—leveraging Algeria’s significant fossil fuel reserves alongside its renewable energy capacity.
Wind Energy’s Strategic Imperative
The integration of wind power into the hydrogen production roadmap underscores the Ministry of Energy’s strategic focus on advancing this sector. As part of the national renewable energy expansion plan, wind energy is projected to contribute around 5000 MW, representing approximately 23% of Algeria’s total renewable energy output in the foreseeable future.
To facilitate this, 21 zones boasting substantial wind potential have been earmarked. These regions, characterized by wind speeds ranging from 5 to 9 m/s at 150 meters altitude, are primarily situated in the southwest, the Oasis region, and the southeast, with additional areas of interest in the northwest and northeast.
Capitalizing on Natural Endowments
Algeria is capitalizing on its wealth of natural resources—both wind and solar—to carve out a prominent position in the global market for renewable energies. This strategic vision encompasses optimizing production to meet anticipated demand from European markets. Sonatrach, in collaboration with German and Italian partners, has initiated four pilot projects, serving as platforms for Algerian professionals to hone their expertise in this burgeoning field.
Infrastructure Reinvention
In tandem with prioritizing green hydrogen production, Algeria is spearheading the modernization of its energy transport infrastructure. Deliberations are underway with European counterparts to establish the SoutH2 corridor, a dedicated conduit for ferrying hydrogen to European destinations.
