The Spanish assembly Torrevieja awards the Esther Garcia Prize to the Sahrawi activist Sultana Khaya

The citizens’ assembly of Torrevieja awarded the 5th prize for the popular struggle “Esther Garcia” to the Sahrawi activist, Sultana Khaya, one of the most outstanding figures of the resistance in Western Sahara.

The award ceremony will take place on March 19 at the “Sergio Garcia” multipurpose hall in Torrevieja (Alicante/Spain).

The 5th Prize is intended to be “a recognition of the right of the Saharawi people to peaceful resistance”, on the one hand, and translates “the opposition of the assembly to the occupation of the Saharawi territories by the Kingdom of Morocco”, somewhere else.

Hosting a press conference on Monday, Ivan Martines, a member of the Council of the Citizens’ Assembly, acknowledged that “Sultana Khaya and her family were subjected to physical and psychological violence to force them to stop claiming the right to self-determination and independence of the Sahrawi people”

Sultana Khaya’s fight for freedom dates back to 2007 when she lost an eye as a student following beatings she received during a demonstration to demand the rights of the Sahrawi people, beatings assaulted by the Moroccan occupation police. In 2018, she traveled to the Canary Islands to treat her injuries.

Sultana Khaya is today the example of thousands of Sahrawis in the occupied territories, deprived of their most fundamental rights.

It should be noted that the Saharawi people were forced to resume the war against the Moroccan occupier on November 13, 2020 following the shameless violation by the Makhzen of the ceasefire agreement.
