Algiers, Algeria | June 17th, 2024 — The African Development Bank (AfDB) recently published a comprehensive report detailing the African economies based on their GDP per capita in purchasing power parity (GDP-PPP). This method allows for a comparison of living standards between countries by accounting for differences in the cost of living and inflation rates.

According to the AfDB’s calculations, the top five richest countries in Africa are:

1. Seychelles: Leading the ranking with a GDP-PPP of $29,711 per capita, Seychelles benefits from an economy focused on luxury tourism and financial services.

3. Gabon: With a GDP-PPP of $19,546 per capita, Gabon ranks third, thanks to its rich natural resources, particularly oil and manganese.
4. Equatorial Guinea: Placing fourth with a GDP-PPP of $18,180 per capita, Equatorial Guinea’s wealth is largely driven by its oil reserves.
5. Egypt: Completing the top five with a GDP-PPP of $17,158 per capita, Egypt benefits from a diversified economy including agriculture, tourism, and an expanding service industry.

6. Botswana: $16,651.5 per capita
