ALGIERS- The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, sparked a strong reaction in Morocco by affirming that the right to self-determination applies to Western Sahara. During his visit to Madrid to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Türk recalled the importance of the clear decisions taken by the Security Council and the United Nations General Assembly regarding this disputed region.
The right to self-determination in the context of Western Sahara
In an interview with “Europe Press,” Volker Türk insisted on the relevance of the right to self-determination in relation to human rights. He said: “There is a right to self-determination, which is part of the human rights framework. » This assertion has significant implications for the ongoing conflict over Western Sahara, where the political status of the region has remained contested for decades.
Türk also stressed that human rights standards should apply not only to residents of Western Sahara, but also to those living in refugee camps in Tindouf, Algeria. For him, human rights must guide any process of reconciliation, trust and justice in the region.
The need for a political solution
The High Commissioner for Human Rights insisted that the resolution of the question of Western Sahara must go through a political process. He expressed hope that a solution can be found for the Sahrawi people, while recognizing that the main responsibility for resolving this conflict does not rest on the shoulders of his office.
Türk said: “This is the most important thing, but it is certainly not the task of the High Commissioner for Human Rights. » He expressed satisfaction with the recent visit of the Special Envoy for Western Sahara, Staffan de Mistura, to the region, which could potentially contribute to progress in the search for a peaceful solution.
Clear decisions from the United Nations
Volker Türk recalled the existence of “very clear decisions of the Security Council and the United Nations General Assembly” concerning Western Sahara. He stressed that to resolve the situation, it is imperative to initiate an inclusive political process that brings together all parties concerned. This highlights the importance of diplomacy and dialogue to end a conflict that has lasted too long.
The Moroccan occupation of Western Sahara
It should be noted that Western Sahara was occupied by Morocco in 1975, despite resistance from the Polisario Front. Conflict continued between Morocco and the Polisario Front until 1991, when the two sides reached a ceasefire in preparation for a referendum on self-determination.
However, in 2022, the Spanish government surprised by announcing its support for the Moroccan autonomy plan for Western Sahara, provoking tensions and criticism from the Polisario Front and Algeria.
Volker Türk’ statement highlights the continued importance of the Western Sahara issue on the international stage and the need for a peaceful resolution based on respect for human rights and the right to self-determination.
