ALGIERS- Morocco has once again been shaken to its core by the unforgiving force of nature. In the wake of the recent devastating earthquake, the cries of anguish and despair echo through the rubble, accompanied by a plea, “Silence, we are dying.” This desperate outcry from survivors, despite the media blockade imposed by Moroccan authorities, exposes not just the consequences of natural disasters, but the shortcomings in our preparedness and response strategies.

Earthquakes are a natural phenomenon, striking indiscriminately across the globe, leaving destruction and sorrow in their wake. However, the real issue lies in our initial response to such catastrophes and the subsequent fallout. Morocco, grappling with the aftermath of this seismic event, has seen survivors desperately calling for help, their voices rising from beneath the debris. These pleas are emblematic of the government’s apparent inability, or perhaps unwillingness, to effectively address the aftermath of this natural calamity.

One alarming development is the rejection of international aid from countries with significant experience and abundant human and logistical resources in managing natural disasters, including earthquakes and floods. This refusal not only raises questions about the priorities of the Moroccan government but also threatens the lives and well-being of countless survivors who desperately need assistance.

Despite the stringent media censorship imposed by Moroccan authorities, the truth has a way of seeping through. Social media, a powerful tool in today’s interconnected world, has played a pivotal role in exposing the grim reality of this disaster. Shocking videos and firsthand accounts from the affected areas have given the world a glimpse into the true extent of the catastrophe. It has become abundantly clear that the crisis is far from being under control.

The rejection of humanitarian aid in the face of such natural disasters amounts to a crime against humanity. The international community stands ready to extend a helping hand, to provide resources, expertise, and support in a time of dire need. To turn away this assistance is to abandon the very principles of compassion and solidarity that bind us as a global society.

If those responsible for such decisions continue to evade accountability, the sad truth is that another earthquake, a human earthquake, will inevitably strike again. This man-made catastrophe, born out of neglect and mismanagement, will neither subside nor fade away. The time to act is now, to extend a hand of friendship and cooperation to all those affected, and to ensure that the cries of “Silence, we are dying” are met with the resounding response of a compassionate and united world.
