Algiers- Algeria, May 10, 2024 – Three agreements and contracts were signed on Thursday between national companies and international partners for mining and metallurgical projects in Gara Djebilet (Tindouf), Tala Hamza in Oued Amizour (Bejaïa), and Béchar, marking significant developments in Algeria’s mining sector.
Supervised by the Minister of Energy and Mines, Mohamed Arkab, the signing ceremony took place on the sidelines of the event commemorating the 58th anniversary of the nationalization of mines and the 57th anniversary of the establishment of the National Company for Mining Research and Exploitation “Sonarem” at the Abdelatif-Rahal International Conference Center.
The first agreement, an Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contract, was formalized between Feraal, a Sonarem subsidiary, and the Chinese company Sinosteel for the construction of the first ore pre-treatment unit in Gara Djebilet, Tindouf province, with an annual production capacity of 4 million tonnes (MT).
The second agreement involves the establishment of a joint venture between the Turkish company “Tosyali” and “Feraal” for the construction of an iron ore concentrate production unit in the Toumiat area of Béchar, with an estimated annual production capacity of 1 million tonnes.
The third agreement, signed between the Algerian-Australian joint venture “West Mediterranean Zinc” (WMZ) and the Chinese company Sinosteel, focuses on the construction of an underground mine at the lead and zinc deposit in Oued Amizour, with an estimated annual capacity of 170,000 tonnes of zinc and 30,000 tonnes of lead.
These agreements signify a significant advancement for Algeria’s mining and metallurgical sectors, enhancing the country’s capabilities in mineral extraction and processing. The collaboration between national companies and international partners reflects Algeria’s commitment to developing its mining industry and utilizing its vast mineral resources.
