Tipaza’s Vibrant Amazigh Heritage: “90% of Population Upholds Strong Amazigh Identity,” Affirms Mohammed Ben Sha’a

ALGIERS- In a recent statement to Dzair Tube, Mohammed Ben Sha’a, the director of Tipaza’s Public Tourist Complex, revealed that approximately 90% of Tipaza’s population identifies as Amazigh.
Ben Sha’a emphasized that despite French colonial attempts to erase the region’s customs and traditions, the ancestors successfully preserved these distinctive features through what is known as “Lemmet Al-Aayla” or “Family Gathering.” Tipaza’s families come together on the night of the Amazigh New Year, locally known as “Yennayer,” celebrated at the grandparents’ house or the “big house.”
Discussing the preparations for this occasion, Ben Sha’a explained that the Public Tourist Complex coordinated with local authorities to launch a comprehensive program named “Souiqa Yennayer.” The event featured the participation of craftsmen and artisans showcasing their products, including traditional clothing, jewelry, pottery, and other items related to the region’s traditional industries and history.
Ben Sha’a noted that the “Souiqa Yennayer” event spanned an entire week, concluding with a traditional dinner and festive evening on Friday. He highlighted that while the celebration of this occasion is common for all residents of North Africa, Tipaza holds its unique traditions.
The “January Festival” serves as a testament to Tipaza’s commitment to preserving its Amazigh identity and cultural heritage, offering both locals and visitors a rich and immersive experience into the region’s distinctive traditions.
