Algiers, Algeria | June 30th, 2024 —The Algerian Red Crescent (CRA) has initiated a forest fire awareness campaign in Tigzirt, a coastal town in the northern region of Tizi-Ouzou. This campaign, launched on Saturday under the slogan “My forest, my lungs; do not let nature disappear; every second counts, act quickly,” aims to mitigate forest fire risks through heightened public awareness and proactive measures.
The campaign was inaugurated by the CRA president, Ibtissam Hamlaoui, accompanied by local authorities. In her address to the press, Hamlaoui emphasized that this initiative is part of the CRA’s broader summer 2024 program, encompassing the entire Tizi-Ouzou province.
Enhanced Surveillance and Community Support
As part of the campaign, a new surveillance center has been established on the main beach of Tigzirt. Hamlaoui highlighted that volunteer rescue teams, affiliated with the 27 local CRA committees (three of which are in the process of being established), will rotate shifts to provide health coverage throughout the summer season. These efforts will support other organizations, including the Civil Protection service.
Additionally, Hamlaoui announced the creation of a new accommodation center dedicated to those accompanying cancer patients receiving treatment at the Draâ Ben Khedda Cancer Center. This initiative aims to ease the burden on families during their loved ones’ treatment periods.
Educational and Social Initiatives
Looking ahead to the upcoming school year, Hamlaoui unveiled a special plan to benefit students across Tizi-Ouzou, from primary to secondary levels. A notable addition to this year’s initiative is the inclusion of clothing in the school kits distributed to children in need. These kits traditionally contain school supplies and uniforms, in alignment with the Ministry of National Education’s programs.
The CRA continues to support individuals with special needs and orphans through regular assistance. Hamlaoui also mentioned the launch of a sewing workshop for widows, which is currently active in the province, providing vocational training and economic empowerment.
Volunteer Engagement and Future Goals
During her visit, Hamlaoui met with CRA volunteers to discuss the organization’s achievements and future plans. She commended the dedication of the Tizi-Ouzou CRA committee, which includes over a thousand volunteers working both nationally and internationally.
Hamlaoui’s visit underscores the CRA’s commitment to community service and disaster preparedness, reflecting the organization’s holistic approach to humanitarian aid and social support.
