ALGIERS-Tosyali Algeria, the national leader in the steel industry, is unveiling its medium and long-term ambitions, anticipating a substantial increase in exports with the launch of its flat steel production plant. Alp Topcuoglu, Vice President of Tosyali Algeria, announced during a panel at the 3rd edition of the Algeria Investment Conference that the group aims to “triple export revenues by introducing products with higher added value.”

This boost in exports is expected with the partial commissioning of the new flat steel production project from June, capable of producing 3 million tons of steel. Topcuoglu attributes this success to the “very favorable investment climate” in Algeria, emphasizing the government’s efforts to promote investment through legislative and financial support.

The $1.5 billion investment in the mega-complex for flat steel manufacturing is anticipated to cater primarily to the appliance, automotive, and shipbuilding industries. The production line, set on a 120-hectare site in Bethioua, Oran, will commence operations in the second half of 2024.

With this expansion, Algeria is poised to transition from a flat steel importer to an exporter. Tosyali Algeria plans to begin exporting flat steel products in 2024, with the excess, estimated at one million tons, earmarked for international markets.

In addition to increasing national integration and creating over 2500 jobs, this project is expected to bolster Algeria’s non-hydrocarbon exports. Tosyali Algeria currently exports reinforcing bars, wire rods, and spiral steel tubes to 50 countries, with a focus on Europe, West Africa, North America, and Latin America.

In 2022, the steel group produced 3 million tons of steel products and exported approximately 1.3 million tons, valued at over $800 million. With the diversification of its production and a stronger presence in international markets, the group aims to surpass $2.5 billion in exports, contributing significantly to Algeria’s economic growth.

It is worth noting that during his visit to the Tosyali booth at the National Production Fair, the Head of State expressed optimism about the production capacity of this steel complex, anticipating a potential increase to “5 million tons and possibly more” once the Gara Djebilet mine is operational.
