Tosyali-Feraal Prepares to Launch 1 Million Tonnes per Year Iron Ore Processing Unit at Gara Djebilet

ALGIERS- Following the visit of the Chinese CMH Consortium, Tosyali-Feraal is gearing up to establish a processing and treatment unit for iron ore extracted from the Gara Djebilet deposit in the industrial zone of Béchar. This visit comes just days before the commencement of construction works for the steel complex entrusted to the Chinese group SinoSteel. The project of the steel hub in Béchar will soon transition from the planning stage to a crucial phase of infrastructure development for processing, transformation, and production.
One of the projects slated for the area is a iron ore treatment unit by the joint venture Feraal-Tosyali, with a production capacity of 500,000 tonnes of iron ore concentrate per year, set to undergo expansion in the coming years. The output from this unit will supply Tosyali’s plant in the industrial zone of Bethioua in Oran. A delegation from the joint venture recently visited the Béchar province to finalize preparations for the project’s launch in the coming days, as per a statement from the province.
With an investment exceeding $150 million, the Algerian-Turkish steel industry company asserts that this unit is part of the valorization program for the Gara Djebilet iron ore megaproject in Tindouf province, with a processing capacity of 1 million tonnes of iron ore per year. Currently, Tosyali’s Oran plant requires around 4 million tonnes of iron ore annually, according to its officials.
As the Béchar steel hub enters the operational phase, scheduled for 2026 with a production capacity of 10 million tonnes of iron concentrate primarily for the local market and exportation of surplus production, Algeria will shift from being an iron ore importer to an exporter in a dynamically evolving global market.
Similarly, the Chinese CMH consortium is following suit with a $1 billion investment to establish a iron ore processing unit with a capacity of 2 million tonnes per year in the Béchar industrial zone, with plans to increase capacities in subsequent years.
Moreover, while preparations for the launch of infrastructure construction for processing and transformation of iron ore from Gara Djebilet are well underway, Anesrif confirms that construction works for the Béchar-Tindouf-Gara Djebilet railway are progressing rapidly. This strategic project, covering a distance of 1000 km, is of vital importance for the Gara Djebilet iron ore megaproject and will facilitate the transportation of over 20 million tonnes of iron ore per year from 2026, with plans to double the volume by 2040.
