Algiers, Algeria | November 20th, 2024 — Touggourt has embarked on a transformative agricultural initiative for the 2024-2025 season, dramatically increasing its wheat and barley cultivation capacity by more than 50% compared to the previous year. This strategic move highlights Algeria’s commitment to enhancing food security and achieving self-sufficiency in essential cereal crops.
According to Mohamed El Amine Houhou, Director of Agricultural Services in Touggourt, the cultivated area for cereals this season has surged to 1,360 hectares, a significant increase of 740 hectares from last year’s 620 hectares. This expanded acreage includes 580 hectares allocated for durum wheat, 580 hectares for soft wheat, and 200 hectares for barley.
To ensure the success of this ambitious campaign, authorities have made substantial resources available to local farmers. Over 3,300 quintals of seeds and 11,144 quintals of fertilizers have been distributed, alongside the mobilization of advanced equipment and technical support. These measures aim to enhance productivity and optimize yields for these critical crops.
The initiative was launched with a ceremonial start to the plowing and sowing season at an agricultural investment project operated by Sonatrach in the El Guedachi area, located in the commune of El H’gira. During the event, Touggourt’s Wali, Othmane Abdelaziz, underscored the importance of such strategic agricultural investments in advancing Algeria’s food independence goals.
Highlighting the vast potential of the region, Abdelaziz called for intensified efforts to further expand cereal cultivation and encouraged both farmers and investors to actively participate in these vital agricultural activities. The Kedashi area itself spans over 10,000 hectares and represents one of the region’s most significant agricultural undertakings. Managed by leading national enterprises specializing in strategic crop cultivation, this initiative is expected to revitalize the local agricultural sector and significantly contribute to Algeria’s broader agricultural development goals.
This remarkable expansion in Touggourt’s agricultural footprint signals a renewed dedication to fortifying the nation’s food security. By prioritizing strategic crop production, Algeria is positioning itself as a regional leader in sustainable agriculture and resource management.
