Algiers, Algeria | July 26th, 2024 — Djanet, a celebrated Saharan destination, has witnessed a remarkable increase in tourism this season, with more than 11,000 international visitors and over 21,000 Algerian nationals arriving since the start of the 2023/2024 tourist season. This substantial influx is reported by the local Directorate of Tourism and Handicrafts (DTA), marking a notable rise from the previous year, which saw around 7,000 foreign tourists and over 18,000 Algerian nationals.
The surge in visitor numbers can be attributed to a series of strategic initiatives aimed at rejuvenating and enhancing Saharan tourism. According to Amine Hammadi from the DTA, these efforts have been instrumental in driving the increased interest in Djanet, known as the “Pearl of the Sahara.”
Key measures that have contributed to this rise include the introduction of a new weekly flight connecting Paris to Djanet, as well as the initiation of new domestic routes linking Constantine and Oran to the Saharan city. These developments are part of a larger strategy to make Djanet a more accessible and appealing destination for both international and domestic tourists.
Additionally, the facilitation of visa issuance at airports and border posts for foreign visitors has significantly streamlined the entry process. The establishment of a one-stop service center has further simplified procedures, enhancing the overall visitor experience.
Travel agencies have also played a role in attracting tourists by implementing price caps, which have made travel to Djanet more affordable and appealing, especially to Algerian families. This pricing strategy has generated heightened interest in exploring the Saharan region.
Tourist agencies have meticulously organized tours to highlight Djanet’s major attractions, including notable archaeological and historical sites such as “Tadreret El-Hamra,” “the Oasis of Iherir,” the Issendilene site, and the ancient ksour of Azelouaz, El-Mihane, and Adjahil.
Preparations for the upcoming 2024/2025 tourist season are already in progress. These preparations involve collaborative meetings among operators, travel agencies, and other stakeholders to further enhance services and develop programs aimed at drawing even more tourists to Djanet.
In addition, volunteer campaigns are set to focus on the cleaning and maintenance of the region’s archaeological and tourist sites, with support from tourism professionals, associations, and hoteliers.
The Tassili N’Ajjer, renowned as one of the world’s largest open-air museums, continues to attract visitors with its millennia-old rock paintings, engravings, and breathtaking natural landscapes. This iconic site remains a premier destination for tourists seeking to experience the rich cultural and natural heritage of the Sahara.
