Algiers, Algeria | June 6th, 2024 — Oran’s picturesque Mediterranean Village has thrown open its doors, welcoming Algerian and international tourists for summer getaways at enticing rates, announced Mohamed Dahoumene, the director of the state-managed enterprise overseeing its operations.

During an engaging open house event showcasing the village’s myriad attractions and amenities, Mr. Dahoumene revealed to APS that the village’s ample capacity has spurred the decision to extend its hospitality to both domestic and foreign tourists year-round, starting from the current summer season.

The Mediterranean Village boasts a staggering 1820 rooms, including 204 singles, offering a total of 3436 beds, distributed across four blocks managed by the enterprise. Additionally, a fifth block has been designated for use by the local youth and sports authority, catering to sports clubs organizing training sessions in Oran.

Highlighting the affordability, Mr. Dahoumene disclosed that accommodation rates range from 3000 DA for single rooms to 3500 DA for double rooms, with meal rates being additional.

Accessible to all residents, the village, which served as accommodations for athletes during the 19th edition of the Mediterranean Games in 2022, aspires to establish itself as a “premier tourist destination,” leveraging its strategic location amidst the scenic beaches of the wilaya’s east and west.

Encompassing 9.3 hectares of verdant greenery, the village boasts an expansive synthetic football field, five small football pitches, four sports halls, a jogging track, a medical center, and three restaurants.

Looking ahead, Mr. Dahoumene announced plans for forthcoming projects, including the construction of two semi-Olympic swimming pools—one of which will be covered—a banquet hall, and a conference room, aiming to enhance the village’s allure and solidify its status as a coveted tourist hotspot.

These initiatives align with broader efforts to showcase Algeria’s tourist potential and invest in the village’s infrastructure, ensuring sustainable revenue streams for its upkeep, in line with government directives.

The open house event, coinciding with World Children’s Day, featured an array of sports and cultural activities for children, with participation from various organizations such as the National Observatory of Civil Society and the National Tourism Office.

Oran: A City Steeped in History and Aspiring to a Bright Future

Oran, a city with a rich history, stands today with aspirations for a bright future that matches its ambitions. Throughout its history, Oran has been a significant scientific and cultural center in the Maghreb region, steadfastly resisting invasions from the northern Mediterranean shore.

The origins of Oran trace back to around 902 AD when Andalusian travelers settled there to capitalize on the strategic port of Mers El-Kébir for trade. Serving as a pivotal trade hub with connections to Europe and North Africa, Oran became the port for the North African kingdom of Tlemcen in 1437, fostering commercial growth and trade with Sudan.

Over time, the city expanded, attracting inhabitants from neighboring regions and establishing itself as a maritime, economic, and cultural hub. However, Oran’s core can be traced back to ancient Berber times when the village of Ifri was built on the left bank of the Oued R’hi, known as Ras El-Aïn.

Throughout centuries of history, Oran witnessed the rule of various dynasties and became a center of intellectual and cultural influence. The city flourished as a hub for science and literature, nurturing scholars and thinkers who contributed to Arab-Islamic civilization.

Despite facing Spanish-Portuguese raids and occupations, Oran remained resilient, ultimately liberating itself from foreign rule on February 27, 1792. The city underwent periods of destruction and reconstruction, with efforts to restore its Arab-Islamic heritage.

During the National Liberation War, Oran played a significant role, witnessing the first operations of November 1, 1954, and earlier, the attack on the Grande Poste on April 5, 1949 by commandos of the Special Organization (OS), which made it possible to obtain funds to finance the armed action against French colonialism.

Since independence, Oran has continued to grow and develop, expanding its urban landscape, fostering economic growth, and investing in various sectors including petrochemicals, steel, automotive, and pharmaceuticals.

Today, Oran boasts three universities, numerous research centers, and modern infrastructure in sports, tourism, and healthcare. The city is determined to continue its renaissance across all domains.
