Algiers- Algeria, May 15, 2024 – The Deputy Public Prosecutor of the Hussein Dey Tribunal has provided an update on the investigation into the tragic drowning incident involving five children at Sablettes beach.

The incident occurred in two stages on May 11th. Initially, a child drowned at around 3:00 PM, followed by another group of children later in the day, where seven of them drowned around 7:00 PM.

Investigations have revealed legal and regulatory negligence, including failure to comply with necessary procedures for organizing such activities, like obtaining permits and trip insurance. Additionally, there was a lack of qualified personnel to supervise the trips and failure to implement essential safety measures for the children.

Initially, thirteen individuals were suspected of involvement, with eight of them placed under arrest for further investigation. Following interrogation, the suspects were presented before the investigating judge. Six of them were ordered into provisional detention, while the remaining suspects were placed under judicial supervision.

The Deputy Public Prosecutor stressed that the investigation is ongoing, and the public will be kept informed of any new developments.

Recap of the Tragedy

In summary, the tragic incident unfolded during two separate excursions organized for children. The first involved 122 students from Zirari Belkacem Primary School, and the second included 69 children from Mohammadi Mohamed Primary School in Ain Boussif.

At approximately 3:00 PM, a 9-year-old child from the first group drowned at Sablettes beach, despite being rescued and later transferred to Mustapha Pacha University Hospital.

Later in the day, around 7:00 PM, children from the second group arrived at the beach for a swim. Tragically, seven of them, aged 8 to 12, drowned, resulting in the loss of five young lives.
