Algiers, Algeria | September 30th, 2024 — In a press conference held in Algiers on Sunday, Minister of Energy and Mines Mohamed Arkab announced an imminent ministerial meeting involving the energy ministers of Algeria, Niger, and Nigeria to evaluate the progress of the strategic Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline (TSGP) project. This initiative aims to enhance energy cooperation among the three nations and facilitate the transportation of natural gas across the Sahara Desert.

Following discussions with Niger’s Minister of Petroleum, Sahabi Oumarou, Arkab reported that both ministers have agreed to expedite the realization of the gas pipeline. They are coordinating the date and location for the upcoming gathering with Nigeria’s Minister of Petroleum to ensure comprehensive engagement among the involved parties.

The TSGP project has already entered its initial phase, with technical studies underway. Progress will be continuously monitored through meetings of both the mixed ministerial committee and the technical committee, ensuring alignment with the established objectives, as highlighted by the APS news agency.

During the press conference, Arkab emphasized Algeria’s commitment to supporting Niger’s oil company, Sonidep S.A., by providing training for personnel across various sectors of the hydrocarbon industry, including exploration, production, transport, and marketing. This collaborative effort aims to enhance Niger’s capabilities in managing its burgeoning oil sector.

In addition to discussions about the gas pipeline, Arkab indicated Algeria’s readiness to assist Niger in petrochemical development, particularly in oil refining, leveraging Algeria’s extensive experience in the field.

Kafra Oil Project

Regarding the oil project led by Sonatrach in the Kafra oil field in northern Niger, Arkab underscored the necessity of accelerating this important initiative. Currently in its second phase, the project focuses on completing exploration efforts before transitioning to the exploitation phase. Both ministers agreed to facilitate all necessary resources to ensure the project’s success.

Arkab further highlighted the significance of strengthening energy ties between Algeria and Niger, noting that Oumarou’s visit, which will extend until Wednesday, is anticipated to culminate in several agreements aimed at reinforcing bilateral energy cooperation.

In his remarks, Oumarou acknowledged that his visit to Algeria follows Arkab’s trip to Niger last August. He also congratulated President Abdelmadjid Tebboune on his recent re-election and expressed Niger’s enthusiasm for deepening cooperation with Algeria, especially in the hydrocarbons sector.

The discussions centered on Algeria’s willingness to support the development of Niger’s emerging oil industry and to enhance its technical capacities. Oumarou emphasized the critical need for training within the energy sector, reinforcing the importance of utilizing Algeria’s expertise in hydrocarbon management to achieve these goals.
