ALGIERS- The Minister of Transport, Mohamed El-Habib Zahana, revealed yesterday in Annaba that his department has set a series of criteria to evaluate ports across the country in order to improve their economic profitability. During this working and inspection visit, the minister emphasized that “the criteria established by the ministry constitute important indicators that will be used to assess the economic efficiency of all ports.”

Zahana added that “the main criteria established in this regard concern the duration of ships’ stay in port, the unloading time of cargo, as well as the movement of container traffic and other services offered to customers,” emphasizing that “these measures aim to improve the performance of Algerian ports in accordance with international standards.”

The minister took this opportunity to call on port managers to work towards meeting challenges and responding to the requirements of global economic transformations, emphasizing the provision of favorable conditions for both national and foreign economic operators, whether in the field of export or import.

At the port of Annaba, the minister supervised the planned works for its modernization, including the rehabilitation of docks, the construction of a shopping center, and a marina. He stressed the need to take necessary measures to open the shopping center, which covers an area of over 7000 square meters, before the summer season of the current year 2024. The new international standard maritime terminal, commissioned in July 2023 to improve passenger reception conditions, was also visited by the minister and his accompanying officials.

Terminal officials confirmed that arrivals from abroad will find vehicle security points and currency exchange facilities within the port premises starting this year.

The Seraidi cable car will be operational again before the end of the year

Mohamed El-Habib Zahana examined the rehabilitation works of the cable car linking the capital of the province to the municipality of Seraidi over a distance of more than 4 km, which has been out of service since 2019 after some of its parts were damaged by adverse weather conditions. It is expected that this important means of transport will be operational again before the end of the current year. The Minister of Transport emphasized the need to intensify efforts to restart the cable car service, completed in 1986, which is an important asset in the field of transportation for the province in general and the residents of the municipality of Seraidi in particular, who number nearly 8000 inhabitants, in addition to being an attraction contributing to the promotion of tourism activities in the region.

Manufacture of wagons: the minister’s wish

Minister Zahana visited the Annaba railway station and the headquarters of the “CITAL” company for the assembly and maintenance of tramways, as well as the urban and peri-urban transport company of the municipality of Sidi Amar. He also visited the “FERROVIAL” company for the manufacture of wagons in the El Aliaq region, in the municipality of El Bouni. The Minister of Transport encouraged the officials present on-site to produce even more and to improve the performance of these factories because it is only in this way that Algeria can achieve the desired advances in this field.
