Algiers, Algeria | July 25th, 2024 — On Wednesday, a commemorative event was organized by the newspaper El Moudjahid and the association Machaâl Echahid to honor Shahid Mustapha Bouhired. The conference, led by moudjahida Zohra Drif Bitat and Mohamed Abbad, President of the association, saw the gathering of several moudjahidine to pay tribute to one of the most iconic figures of the Algerian War of Independence.
Zohra Drif provided a detailed recount of Mustapha Bouhired’s life and his pivotal contributions to the resistance movement. Bouhired, along with his sister Djamila Bouhired, played a crucial role in the Battle of Algiers. Drif highlighted his courageous actions, including his establishment of a bomb-making workshop situated directly above his children’s room. She emphasized Bouhired’s unwavering dedication to the National Liberation Front (FLN), noting his role in sheltering prominent figures such as Yacef Saadi and Ali Amar, also known as Ali la Pointe. His residence on Rue de la Grenade in the Casbah became a haven for numerous fidayine and a powerful symbol of defiance against French colonial forces.
Drif also touched on the tragic end of Bouhired’s life. After being arrested in Ain Bessem, Bouhired was executed in the Casbah of Algiers on March 14, 1957. His execution, witnessed by his wife Fatiha, who was left with five young children, was a stark representation of the colonial brutality faced by many revolutionaries. Drif’s moving narrative underscored the profound sacrifices made by those who fought for Algeria’s independence, highlighting Bouhired’s ultimate sacrifice and the severe challenges endured by his family.
