Algiers, Algeria | August 19th, 2024 — In a remarkable show of support, thousands of Algerians gathered on Friday at the Ahmed-Bey Hall in Constantine to welcome President Abdelmadjid Tebboune as he launched his re-election campaign ahead of the September 7 presidential election. Citizens from 18 wilayas of the country’s eastern region flocked to the rally, their exuberance palpable as they filled the hall with chants, songs, and banners in a moving demonstration of their deep affection for the incumbent leader. From the enthusiastic cries of “Rana maaek ya âammi Tebboune” to the moving moment when a young child called out his name, the emotional connection between the president and the people was undeniable.

Tebboune, visibly touched by the overwhelming reception, addressed the crowd with his signature candor, reiterating his dedication to keeping the commitments he made during his first term. “I never made electoral promises,” Tebboune reminded the crowd, “but I set 54 goals, and I have fulfilled them all.” His words were met with thunderous applause as he unveiled an ambitious new agenda aimed at further strengthening Algeria’s economic and social fabric.

Housing and Economic Growth at the Forefront

Among the cornerstone promises of his new term, Tebboune emphasized the urgent need to address the housing crisis. His pledge to construct two million new homes, particularly targeting rural and social housing, ignited renewed excitement in the hall. “Yes, two million homes!” Tebboune declared emphatically, drawing cheers from the audience. He also reassured the public that his administration would continue to bolster Algerians’ purchasing power, pledging that wages would increase by up to 100%, while taxes would be further reduced.

Tebboune vowed to tackle inflation and speculation, ensuring that economic gains are felt by all. His plan for regional equity remains a priority, with a promise that no area of the country will be left behind in Algeria’s march toward development. Tebboune’s vision for food security is equally bold: by the end of 2025, he committed to achieving complete self-sufficiency in key staples such as durum wheat, maize, and barley, marking an end to costly imports. “Not a single dollar will be spent on these imports again,” he affirmed, once more drawing rapturous applause.

Expanding Algeria’s Global Influence and Economic Ambitions

Tebboune’s economic vision extends far beyond housing and agriculture. He announced plans to double Algeria’s irrigated farmland to more than 3 million hectares by 2026, a substantial increase designed to sustain the nation’s agricultural boom. Highlighting the nation’s financial independence, he proudly noted that Algeria’s budget now exceeds $113 billion without relying on soaring oil prices. “Our financial stability is not dependent on oil,” Tebboune remarked. “It is the result of prudence, integrity, and the safeguarding of public funds.” He pointed to the nation’s economic growth rate of 4.6%, the highest in the Mediterranean region, surpassing even some European countries, as evidence of Algeria’s bright economic future.

Looking ahead, Tebboune revealed that his second term would prioritize economic development above all, with a commitment to diversifying Algeria’s economy. He also underscored the strategic importance of resource extraction, reiterating his ambition to turn Algeria into a leading global exporter of iron and phosphate. “By the end of 2025, the dream of late President Boumediene will be realized through the exploitation of Ghara Djebilet’s mineral wealth,” Tebboune said, adding that this would create jobs and drive national wealth.

On the global stage, Tebboune reassured Algerians that their country has regained its international stature without compromising its principles. He proudly cited Algeria’s adherence to non-alignment policies and its steadfast support for oppressed peoples. Reaffirming his unwavering commitment to Palestine, Tebboune promised, “If the Rafah crossing is opened, we will build three hospitals in Gaza within 20 days and send over 100 doctors to contribute to its reconstruction.” His pledge brought the crowd to its feet, chanting “âammi Tebboune President” and “Tahia Falastine” in a passionate outburst of solidarity. He also emphasized Algeria’s enduring support for Western Sahara, asserting that the country would continue to stand by the Sahrawi people in their struggle for freedom. “Let others sell out this noble cause as they will, but we will always stand beside those fighting to live freely on their ancestral lands,” Tebboune declared to an enthusiastic crowd.

A Vision for Algeria’s Future

In his closing remarks, Tebboune delivered a powerful message, encapsulating the pride and resilience of the Algerian people. “They tried to humiliate Algeria,” he said, “but today, our anthem echoes across Paris.” The moment resonated deeply with the crowd, a symbol of Algeria’s newfound prominence and strength on the world stage. Tebboune’s rally in Constantine will be remembered as a historic day, with a president who continues to inspire hope and ambition for the future of Algeria.
