Algiers, Algeria | November 08th, 2024 — The Algerian Enterprise for the Development of Strategic Agricultural Crops (DCAS) has signed two significant agreements aimed at ensuring a steady and sufficient water supply for agricultural units focused on strategic crops across the nation.
The first agreement, signed between DCAS CEO Mustapha Belhanini and National Sanitation Office (ONA) Director General Mohssen Gharib Dia, prioritizes water distribution for agricultural units under DCAS’s management. These units specialize in essential crops such as grains, oilseeds, durum wheat, and fruit trees, all classified as strategic to Algeria’s agricultural sustainability and food security.
In the second agreement, Nacerddine Rakrouki, Director General of the National Office of Irrigation and Drainage (ONID), joined Belhanini in outlining a dedicated allocation of treated wastewater for irrigating these vital agricultural units. Speaking at the signing ceremony, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Youcef Cherfa, highlighted that treated water will be used to irrigate 66,000 hectares out of the 114,000 hectares managed by DCAS across 174 units. Cherfa emphasized that this initiative brings Algeria closer to achieving the presidential goal of expanding irrigated agricultural land to one million hectares, which will be crucial for enhancing productivity and ensuring resilience against water scarcity.
Agriculture Minister Cherfa expressed confidence that these agreements will significantly enhance Algeria’s agricultural output by improving technical practices and increasing land productivity. He commended the productive collaboration between the Ministries of Agriculture and Water Resources, which was pivotal in formulating these agreements.
On his part, Minister of Water Resources Taha Derbal noted that the nation’s 232 wastewater treatment systems represent a vital source of non-conventional water that can provide essential support to the agricultural sector. With a theoretical annual treatment capacity of 1.69 billion cubic meters, this infrastructure will facilitate supplementary water supply for irrigation, a key component of Algeria’s water management strategy.
Derbal added that these agreements embody Algeria’s commitment to the rational use of water resources, focusing on sustainable irrigation methods that conserve water. He reiterated his ministry’s dedication to advancing water mobilization efforts, crucial for both agriculture and broader economic stability in a context of increasing environmental pressures.
