ALGIERS– Matthew Miller, the spokesperson for the U.S. Department of State, commented on the recent developments in the Mali crisis, particularly the transitional government’s decision to withdraw from the Algiers Agreement. The agreement was established in 2015 between Malian authorities and groups in northern Mali and the Kidal region. Miller stated that the White House administration regrets “this decision,” emphasizing that the implementation of the Algiers Agreement “would have brought more stability to all Malians and the region as a whole.”
The European Union also favors “the path of inclusive dialogue advocated by Algeria as an international mediator to resolve disputes and promote the establishment of lasting peace in northern Mali.”
Earlier, Algeria had warned of “the negative consequences that could result from such a move.” In a public statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the National Community Abroad supported: “The Malian people must know that such regrettable and unwelcome decisions have proven in the past that the military option is the primary threat to the unity and territorial security of Mali. It carries the seeds of civil war in Mali, delaying national reconciliation instead of bringing it closer and ultimately constitutes a real threat to regional peace and stability.”
