ALGIERS, August 15, 2023– In a startling revelation, The Wall Street Journal has published a comprehensive report detailing the involvement of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in fueling the ongoing conflict in Sudan. The report sheds light on the role of UAE’s leadership, particularly President Mohammed bin Zayed, in supporting one faction of the Sudanese conflict. This exposé has sent shockwaves through diplomatic circles and ignited concerns about the UAE’s wider influence on regional conflicts.

A Disturbing Account

The report’s findings have sparked controversy, highlighting the UAE’ support for one of the parties involved in the conflict that has been devastating Sudan. According to the report, an Emirati cargo plane arrived in Uganda earlier this year, carrying humanitarian aid for Sudanese refugees. However, Ugandan officials discovered that the cargo contained assault weapons and ammunition instead of the expected food and medical supplies. This incident has raised serious questions about the UAE’s intentions and its purported role in exacerbating the conflict.

Emirati Denials and Counterclaims

In response to the allegations, the UAE’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has vehemently denied any involvement in supplying weapons or ammunition to any party in the Sudanese conflict. The UAE claims that the cargo plane’s contents were indeed meant for humanitarian aid to assist refugees affected by the ongoing conflict. However, the discovery of weapons and ammunition in the shipment has raised doubts about the accuracy of these claims.

A Pattern of Influence

The report also highlights a broader pattern of the UAE’s involvement in regional conflicts and power struggles. The UAE’s role in destabilizing countries across the Arab region and Africa is not new, and concerns about its impact on political, social, and economic structures have been growing. The report suggests that the UAE’s influence extends beyond supplying arms, encompassing financial support, media manipulation, and alliances with factions that further its interests.

Supporting Sudan’s Power Struggle

The report indicates that the UAE’s involvement in Sudan dates back to the aftermath of the coup against President Omar al-Bachir. The UAE reportedly sought to leverage the Transitional Military Council, providing significant financial resources to key figures within the military, particularly Hamidti, the leader of the Rapid Support Forces. This group has been embroiled in battles against the Sudanese army since April 15, further exacerbating the conflict.

According to Ugandan officials cited in the newspaper report, a concerning incident unfolded when an Emirati plane, despite being found carrying a cache of weapons, was permitted to proceed with its journey to the “Am Djeres” international airport in eastern Chad. The rationale behind this decision stemmed from the understanding that the shipment, originally destined for Sudan, had fallen under the jurisdiction of Sudanese authorities. This incident further underscores the intricate web of geopolitical complexities surrounding the UAE’s role in the region.

There have been persistent reports highlighting the United Arab Emirates’ involvement in exacerbating the turmoil within Sudan, particularly following the ousting of President Omar al-Bashir. This upheaval presented an opportune moment for the UAE to exert its influence over the Transitional Military Council, a power play that included extensive support for key figures like Hamidti, commander of the Rapid Support Forces. Notably, Hamidti had previously amassed substantial financial resources during the last year of Al-Bashir’s rule, capitalizing on the Rapid Support Forces’ deployment in Yemen and the export of Sudanese gold to Dubai. In an astonishing show of support, the UAE promptly pledged a substantial $3 billion in direct aid to the newly established regime within a mere ten days.

Revelations made by The Telegraph, a British newspaper, exposed the UAE’s intricate involvement in arming and supporting Hamidti’s militia. Disturbingly, the Sudanese army’s discovery of thermobaric missiles with origins traced back to Serbia in 2020 raised significant questions about the flow of weaponry. These missiles had made their way to the Emirates before ultimately finding their way into the hands of Hamidti’s militia. The web of arms proliferation only serves to deepen concerns about the extent of the UAE’s role in fueling regional conflicts.

Furthermore, the UAE’s engagement extended beyond arming military factions. The Emirates strategically harnessed its extensive resources, including media platforms, to fan the flames of the ongoing conflict in Sudan, thereby furthering the interests of its ally. This is exemplified by the fact that Hemeti’s official page is managed exclusively from within the UAE. Collectively, these revelations paint a complex picture of international intrigue, wherein the UAE’s actions and involvement continue to play a significant role in shaping the region’s political and military landscape.

Regional Implications

The UAE’s involvement in Sudan raises broader concerns about regional stability and its impact on neighboring countries. Reports suggest that the UAE’s methods involve a combination of financial, military, and media support for parties involved in conflicts. This approach has not only sparked worries about the Emirates’ intentions but also stirred debates about its influence on regional dynamics.

The Road Ahead

As the situation continues to evolve, analysts and observers will be closely monitoring any developments that shed light on the extent of the UAE’s involvement in Sudan and its potential impact on the ongoing conflict and broader regional stability.
