Algiers, Algeria | October 31st, 2024 — Mandla Mandela, South African parliamentarian and grandson of Nelson Mandela, revealed that the UK government denied his visa application, despite his diplomatic passport, which typically allows visa-free entry. This rejection prevented him from participating in pro-Palestinian events scheduled earlier this month.

On October 21, the UK Home Office issued a letter to Mandela citing his vocal support for the Palestinian resistance, specifically mentioning his endorsement of Hamas, as the primary reason for his visa denial. The letter pointed to social media posts where Mandela expressed solidarity with Hamas and resistance efforts. It also referenced a photo of Mandela with Ismail Haniyeh, the Hamas leader, who paid tribute to Mandela’s work for justice following his assassination by Zionist forces.

Mandela denounced the visa denial, calling it a restriction on his freedom of expression. He emphasized his determination to continue championing Palestinian rights, stating, “We will not be silenced. Denying a visa will not prevent us from speaking out for justice, peace, and equality. We will persist in condemning the unjust occupation, genocide, and ethnic cleansing in Gaza and all occupied Palestinian territories, actions facilitated by powers like the UK.”

Reflecting on his grandfather’s legacy, Mandela drew parallels between his current struggle for Palestinian rights and his grandfather’s unyielding stance against apartheid in South Africa. “My grandfather’s freedom was also conditional upon relinquishing his principles, a condition he rejected in Transkei. He stood firm in his pursuit of justice, embodying freedom, justice, and human rights for all,” Mandela remarked.
