UK Reaffirms Commitment to UN-Led Efforts on Western Sahara

Algiers, Algeria | January 24th, 2025 — In a renewed stance underscoring commitment to international law and multilateral diplomacy, the British government has reiterated its support for United Nations-led efforts to achieve a just, durable, and mutually acceptable political resolution to the Western Sahara conflict. This reaffirmation highlights the importance of safeguarding the Sahrawi people’s inalienable right to self-determination.

The statement was delivered by the UK Minister of State for Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Affairs in response to a parliamentary inquiry from a member of the Conservative Party, as reported by the Sahrawi Press Agency. The minister emphasized that “the United Kingdom remains steadfast in backing the efforts led by the United Nations and the work of Staffan de Mistura, the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy for Western Sahara.”

The minister further underlined that the UK actively encourages constructive engagement in the UN political process, calling on all parties involved to contribute meaningfully. “The United Nations-led process remains the most viable pathway to resolving this protracted conflict. Reaching an agreement that is acceptable to all parties will not only uphold the principles of justice and self-determination but will also significantly bolster regional security and prosperity,” the minister stated.

The UK’s position aligns with its broader foreign policy priorities, emphasizing the role of diplomacy, international cooperation, and the preservation of regional stability in addressing long-standing disputes. By reiterating its support for Staffan de Mistura’s mission, London has reinforced its commitment to the ongoing negotiation process, which seeks to bridge the divide between the Polisario Front, representing the Sahrawi people, and Morocco.

The Western Sahara conflict remains one of the most enduring territorial disputes on the international stage, with the Sahrawi people calling for the implementation of UN resolutions affirming their right to a referendum on self-determination.
