ALGIERS- In a decisive move, the United Nations General Assembly has overwhelmingly approved a resolution to combat Islamophobia, with strong support from member states.

During a vote held on the International Day for Combating Islamophobia, the resolution on “Measures to Combat Islamophobia” was adopted with 115 votes in favor, 44 abstentions, and no opposing votes.

Pakistan spearheaded the resolution, forming a united front among member states of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to address Islamophobia on the global stage.

The resolution calls for the appointment of a UN Special Envoy to combat Islamophobia. Furthermore, it urges member states to take decisive action against religious intolerance, particularly Islamophobia.

Additionally, the resolution requires the UN Secretary-General to submit a report on the implementation of measures and efforts to combat Islamophobia to the General Assembly next fall.

Last July, the UN adopted a resolution condemning the burning of the Holy Quran and categorizing attacks on the Muslim holy book as “religious hatred.” During the same month, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution considering all acts of violence against holy books as a violation of international law.

The definition of attacks against the Holy Quran as an act of religious hatred and a violation of international law lays the groundwork for future measures to be taken.
